Life can sometimes feel like a carousel ride.
Round and round we go, sitting on different horses, hearing the same music, watching the same scenery pass by again and again. At first, it can feel entertaining, familiar, even comforting. But over time, we may begin to notice something deeper: the ride is not really taking us anywhere new.
At the very centre of this carousel is the loudest noise. This is the place of mental chatter, self-doubt, repetitive stories, negative self-talk, old beliefs, and emotional reactions. It is the inner pull of the mind that keeps us circling around the same thoughts and experiences.
The closer we are to the centre of the carousel, the louder the chatter becomes.
This is where many of us begin.
The Inner Ring: Where the Chatter Is Loudest
On the carousel, the horses closest to the centre represent the thoughts, stories, and patterns that carry the strongest charge.
These may sound like:
“I’m not good enough.”
“This always happens to me.”
“I can’t change.”
“I’ll never get past this.”
“What if I fail?”
“I should have done things differently.”
When we are on this inner ring, the noise can feel overwhelming. The mind repeats the same stories, and because we have heard them so many times, we may believe they are true.
We move from one horse to another, hoping something will feel different. A new relationship, a new job, a new distraction, a new goal, a new habit. For a while, the noise may quiet down. But eventually, the same inner music begins again.
This is the first stage of awareness: realizing that the carousel is moving, but we are not truly moving forward.
Awareness Begins the Shift
The moment we become aware of the chatter, something powerful happens. We begin to see that we are not the chatter itself. We are the one noticing it. That recognition creates space.
Instead of being pulled automatically into every repetitive thought, we begin to observe it. We start to notice the charge behind it. We may ask ourselves:
“Is this thought helping me?”
“Is this story still true?”
“Where did this belief come from?”
“Do I want to keep riding this horse?”
This is not about forcing the mind to be silent. It is about learning how to relate to the mind differently.
The centre of the carousel has a strong pull, but awareness helps us loosen that pull. We begin to understand that we have more control than we once believed.
The Second Ring: The Charge Begins to Lessen
As we practise awareness, we start to move away from the centre. We enter the middle ring of the carousel.
Here, the music is still playing, but it is not as loud. The old stories may still appear, but they do not always have the same power. We can catch ourselves sooner. We can pause before reacting. We can notice when we are being pulled back toward familiar patterns. This is often where deeper work begins.
Some thoughts may be easy to release. Others may still carry a strong emotional charge. These are the stories that have been repeated for years, sometimes since childhood. They may be connected to fear, rejection, shame, grief, anger, or a need to feel safe. In this second ring, we learn patience.
We try different horses. We explore different tools. We practise new ways of responding. We learn that growth is not always instant, but every moment of awareness matters. Each time we choose not to feed an old story, its charge begins to weaken.
The Outer Ring: New Pathways of Thinking and Being
Eventually, with practice, we move to the outer ring of the carousel.
From here, the centre is no longer controlling us in the same way. We can still hear the music, but it does not dominate our experience. Thoughts may still come and go, but we are no longer riding every one of them.
This is where new pathways begin to form.
We begin to think differently.
We begin to respond differently.
We begin to speak to ourselves differently.
We begin to choose differently.
The old stories lose their grip because we are no longer giving them the same energy.
On the outer ring, we may still ride some horses, but not all of them. We become more selective. We recognize which thoughts serve our growth and which ones keep us circling in the past. This is the result of awareness, practice, and conscious choice.
Jumping Off the Ride
The greatest moment comes when we realize we no longer need to stay on the carousel at all.
We can step off.
To step off the ride means we are no longer living unconsciously through old patterns, old stories, and old emotional charges. We are no longer allowing repetitive mind chatter to decide the direction of our life.
Instead, we begin walking a new path.
This path is not chosen by fear.
It is not chosen by self-doubt.
It is not chosen by the old noise from the centre.
It is chosen consciously.
We begin to move forward with greater clarity, confidence, and self-trust. The chatter may still appear from time to time, but it no longer has the same control. We have tools. We have awareness. We have practice. We have a choice.
The Practice of Leaving Old Stories Behind
Moving away from the centre of the carousel is not about denying our thoughts or pretending everything is fine. It is about recognizing when a thought, belief, or story no longer serves who we are becoming.
It is about learning how to release the charge.
That may involve slowing down, breathing, reflecting, journaling, talking things through, receiving guidance, or learning new tools that help us understand the mind and emotions more clearly. The more we practise, the more we strengthen new pathways.
Over time, the old mental loops become less automatic. The negative chatter becomes quieter. The emotional charge softens. We begin to experience more space between thought and reaction. In that space, we find freedom.
Support Along the Way
This kind of inner work can be powerful, but it is not always easy to do alone.
Having tools, guidance, and support can help us recognize where we are on the carousel and how to move outward with more awareness. Working with Rob and Gary of The Journeymen Collective can offer a way to explore these patterns, understand the charge behind old stories, and practise new ways of thinking, feeling, and being. The journey is not about judging where we are. It is about becoming aware of what is keeping us circling. Once we see the ride clearly, we can begin to choose differently.
Choosing Your New Path
Life may feel like a carousel at times, but we are not meant to stay on the same ride forever. We are here to learn, grow, and become more conscious of the thoughts and stories that shape our lives. The centre may be loud, and the pull may be strong, but awareness gives us a way out.
First, we notice the noise.
Then, we recognize the charge.
Then, we practise choosing differently.
Eventually, we move outward.
And one day, we step off the ride.
That is where a new path begins.
A path created not by old chatter, fear, or self-doubt, but by conscious awareness, inner freedom, and the decision to move forward in life with greater clarity and purpose.
